The use of glass beads in Native American design began during the seventeenth century when European traders and colonists exchanged the beads for furs. After the American War of Independence ended in 1783, Native Americans capitalized on their skills and began to produce intricately beaded bags to sell to European settlers. The floral decoration of this example, set against a dark background, exemplifies the work they produced during the late nineteenth century.
