Between 1821 and 1830, fashions in women's dress began to move rapidly away from the vertical, high-waisted style, towards a new romanticism and fullness. Reticules continued to be made of soft dress fabrics, their decoration becoming more ornate with fringing and floral motifs. In 1820, circular shapes closing with a drawstring of ribbon or cord were popular and easily made at home. Lightweight frames with silver or steel clasps and chain handles were available ready made, and fabric bags were simply stitched on to them.
