Ballena azteca

A whale isn´t a recurrent figure in Juarez work of sculpture unlike bulls, horses or pigeons, but is not totally out of one of his mains topics prehispanic Mexico.
Ballena Azteca use prehispanic motifs like the grecas in the body that belongs from the archeological zone of "Mitla" in Oaxaca. The details in the border of the tail remembers the treatment of borders of some figures in Mixteca Códices. Its mouth is similar to the sculptures of Quetzalcoaltl from the "Templo de Quetzalcoatl" in "Teotihuacan" and its eyes are similar to the sculptures of this temple an others from the "Templo Mayor". In other words the sculpture is mix of diffent prehispanic influences.
The tail of Ballena azteca is not like like in a whale remembering more depictions of fish in different códices and mural paintings.
