Bamberger Psalter, fol.115v-116r (Montage)

On the third day after his crucifixion, Christ rises from the dead and appears in human form to
witnesses shortly thereafter. Christ rises triumphantly from a Roman-style sarcophagus. In his left hand, he carries a staff known as the “Resurrection Cross”. He wears the tri-colored robes seen in earlier miniatures, but his chest remains bare in order to show the healed wound from the Holy Lance,
which is characteristic of resurrection scenes from nothern Germany.
The fearful watcher in the middle, who, hunched over, holds a sword in his lap, demonstrates the variety of skill the illustrator had in portraying three variations of a seated position.

Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus ascends in the Heavens to be seated at the right hand of
God the Father.
The upper part of the miniature is the heavenly part, which shows Jesus ascending into the
clouds. Once again, like in the Holy Spirit descending during His baptism, the top frame parts in
a cloud-shape pattern to allow Jesus, who still bears His Resurrection Banner, to ascend. The bottom curves of the mandorla also bear a similar blue-white gradation pattern to that of the frame opening above, suggesting that Jesus is already in the sky during this scene. In the lower part of the miniature (the earthly half), Mary and three of Jesus’ disciples look up in awe. Mary and Peter, the disciple with grey hair, raise their hands not only in fear and astonishment, but also in prayer.
