Bamberger Psalter, fol.60v-61r (Montage)

Jesus fasts for 40 days and nights in the desert, during which Satan appears and attempts to tempt
him three times into committing sins of hedonism, egoism, and materialism. Satan, in the shape of an anthropomorphic demon, flies into the miniature from the top of the page. His contorted body that wraps around the contour of the frame itself creates a frightening and menacing image. In the face of a terrifying and tempting Satan, Jesus remains stoic and composed. He sits on a throne, albeit one carved from the same landscape as the quasi-surrealistic boulders and rock formations in the background that are reminiscent of a Byzantine landscape. Christ rejects the three temptation of the Devil with an open right hand.
