Our origins of living beings

Nearly 4 billion years ago molecules, such as amino acids, were responsible for the formation of life on earth. Bacteria, the first living beings, progressively introduced oxygen into the oceans and atmosphere: then life really took off.

Until 2 billion years ago, most of the oxygen produced by bacteria remained trapped at the bottom of the ocean in the form of iron oxides.
