In this view looking down on Peel Park, the figures around the bandstand are tiny, ‘like iron filings around a magnet’ as one writer described them. The inner circle of dancers are surrounded by others watching and listening to the music. The rectangular roofs of the park greenhouses can be seen in the foreground. In 1931 Lowry painted an almost identical version of this scene in oils.
