Krishen Khanna painted using thick impasto strokes and was perhaps one of the earliest artists in modern Indian art to dabble with abstraction.

His figurative paintings with their unbounded energy received an added advantage. The thick impasto strokes also seen in his previous work became charged with a bolder more vivid palette. His work continued to focus on the happenings of daily life, street culture and the working class. The energy and exuberance of the ‘Bandwala’ has been captured with the use of vivacious colour.
