Original artwork for 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine'. Published as an engraving entitled, 'Rosa Banksie. Lady Bank's Rose,' in 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine', Vol.45 (1818), plate 1954.
'Curtis's Botanical Magazine' was started by the English botanist and entomologist William Curtis (1746-1799) in London in 1787. It is the longest running botanical periodical and features colour illustrations of plants.
Sydenham Teast Edwards (1768-1819) was a botanical and natural history illustrator. Born in Usk, Monmouthshire, he created most of the illustrations for 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine' from 1787 until the 1810s.
This rose was named for Lady Sarah Banks, the wife of botanist and director of Kew Gardens, Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820).
