The Mannheim entrepreneur Heinrich Peil and his wife Barbara Sitt Peil appear in this pair of portraits by an unknown artist. His talent is fully evident in the way in which he captures the sitters' physiognomy and expressions, as well as in the careful differentiation of textures, especially in the satiny and felted blacks and in the filmy scarf around Barbara Peil's neck. Posing the sitters against a neutral background, the artist provides an imposing view appropriate to this upper-middle class couple.
