Baroque mirror from the second half of the 18th century
This mirror is located in the ceremonial hall of Prem Castle. The western half of the castle’s north wing is taken up by the two-storey hall, which was created in 1930 by knocking together the rooms on the first and second floors. Running round the hall at a height corresponding to the floor level of the second storey is a wooden gallery resting on corbels and enclosed by a wooden balustrade. On the hall’s east wall there is a large fireplace with a large hood decorated with the coat of arms of the Zuccolini family.
The walls of the hall have recently been fully restored. The wall paintings, created in 1932 by Mario Lannes of Trieste, are of merely average artistic merit and are chiefly important today as a reflection of the tastes and culture of the castle’s pre-war owners, and as a document of the period in which they were painted. The walls in the lower part of the hall are decorated with representations of the four seasons.
The north wall is taken up with a hunting scene in which Zuccolini’s wife is depicted as the Roman goddess Diana. The four seasons in the lower part of the hall are complemented by depictions of the twelve signs of the zodiac in the upper part. Zuccolini himself, the owner of the castle, is portrayed as Sagittarius. The baroque mirror dating from the second half of the eighteenth century was removed from the castle in the 1950s. Following its rediscovery in 2011, the mirror was restored and returned to its original location.
