Taranto, Italy

Support for a male statue, of which the right foot and the coils of a snake coiled around an omphalos (literally “navel”, a conical stone kept in the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi, indicating the centre of the world) are preserved. The base bears a dedicatory epigraph: “Dionysius of Athens, son of Dionysus, and Cosmianus Seleucus, to the god Taras dedicated”. It is therefore a fragment of a statue representing the young Taras, the city’s eponymous hero.
