Batik of Miao Ethnic Minority

Yunnan Provincial Museum

Yunnan Provincial Museum
Kunming, China

Batik of the Miao ethnic minority is a time-honored technique. Recordings in the Book of The Later Han (Hou Han Shu) of ethnic minorities living in the southwest of China “weaving, dyeing and embroidering” indicate that people of ethnic groups in those areas had mastered the techniques of dyeing, weaving and embroidering back in the Han dynasty (202 BC-220 AD) or even earlier. Having been widely applied in apparel-making by the Miao people, batik elements can be found in almost all the types of Miao garments including tops, skirts, waist wraps, among others, as well as in other daily necessities made of cotton.
