Oil painting by Ángel Cortellini Sánchez (1858–1912), painted during his time as paintings conservator at the Naval Museum. Cortellini painted numerous scenes recreating historical events, first studying them and then capturing them on canvas. One such painting is this recreation of the encounter between a Spanish frigate and the English ship "Stanhope," during the War of the Spanish Succession, in which Spanish naval officer Blas de Lezo (1689–1714) took part.
Blas de Lezo was posted to the port of Rochefort (France) between 1710 and 1711 on coastguard duty. While there, he took part in the capture of several enemy ships and was promoted to frigate captain. Among the defeated ships was the great English ship "Stanhope," commanded by John Combs and captured by Lezo's frigate. Lezo was wounded in the encounter.
