The Battle of Khotyn in 1621 was a 39-day battle between the troops of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire near the city of Khotyn, the final part of the Khotyn War of 1620-1621. It ended with the victory of the united forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ukrainian Cossacks. A huge contribution to the destruction of the Ottoman army near Khotyn was made by the Zaporozhian Cossacks, led by hetman Pyotr Sahaydachny, who is depicted in the center of the canvas. As a result of the defeat at Khotyn, the Turkish Sultan Osman II was forced to end the war.
