Battle of Moscow

François GEORGIN and PELLERIN19th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

In June 1812, Napoleon decided to march on Russia in order to push Czar Alexander I to sign a peace treaty in favor of France: the very murderous Russian campaign then began.
This plate by Georgin and Pellerin portrays the terrible battle of Borodino, which Napoleon calls the Battle of Moscow. It begins on September 7, 1812.
If the outcome of the battle was favorable for the French troops at first, despite the many human losses, it was only short-lived when the Grand Army entered Moscow on September 14th and left on the 19th.
Thus began the infamous Retreat from Russia.
The French army is ill-prepared for this long campaign which will result in heavy losses, in particular because of the lack of supplies and bad conditions.
