The pen painting shows a general picture towards the end of the Battle of the Sound. In the center of the foreground, seen to port, is a galliot under sail, probably Willem van de Velde's galliot. To the left, seen to starboard, lies the Prinses Albertina (36 guns) commanded by Captain Auke Stellingwerf. On the mirror we see a female figure flanked by angels. The ship (built in 1653 for the Admiralty of Friesland) is in battle with a Swedish admiralship. In the foreground on the right is a burning wreckage. Behind this wreck is a seized Swedish ship, of which only the mainmast is still standing. This ship is possibly the Wismar. At the bow on the starboard side, seen on the port side, a Dutch ship meets. This is possibly the Breda, sailing under the command of Captain H. Bruynsvelt. In the background you can see the flag of Captain D. Verveen, on board the Zon. Even further back, just above the smoke, you can see the flags of De Halve Maen and the Eendracht by Jacob van Wassenaer. The stern of a Swedish ship can just be distinguished on the right.
