The state coach was a formal vehicle used to convey royalty or high officials in processions or other official business. The state coaches of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were excessively ornamental with gilded, carved sculptures of allegorical figures, silks, brocades and elaborate paintings. Nineteenth century state coaches retained their formality but, in accordance with the prevailing tastes and improved technology, were simplified and more comfortable than their prototypes.

This State Coage belonged to Prince Adalbert of Bavaria (1828-1875) who was the youngest son of King Ludwig I of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
