This fragment of Century Guild wallpaper shows the ‘Bay Leaf’ pattern in which diagonal branches of bay in two shades of brown overlap each other against a red background. The group’s ‘CG’ monogram is included in the design on one of the branches. The pattern was designed by Herbert Horne and shows a classical influence. Bay leaves were associated with the god Apollo in ancient Greece and used to decorate buildings and crown winning athletes.
