Colourful metal beach bucket depicting Dutch children at play made by Acme Toys, England.
South Australia has always had a strong beach culture. Often the only way Adelaidians endured the sweltering summers was by retreating to the seaside. Beach buckets like this one were popular children's toys and were used for beach combing and building sandcastles from the 19th century up until the present.

  • Title: Beach Bucket
  • Date Created: 1935-01-01/1965-12-31
  • Provenance: The early beach pails had simple designs and consisted of one or two colours of paint covered with a coat of lacquer to give a glossy finish. Hand painting, stencilling, stamping and embossing were other methods used to decorate pails before the 1900s. Around the 1930s, graphics were applied through chromolithograph. This process revolutionized the toy industry and turned out over fifty tin-plated sheets per minute, which allowed toy makers to create detailed scenes on the pails and to finish them in a range of vivid colours.
