Before it was restored in 1852-53, the east front of the Beauchamp Tower was largely hidden behind newer buildings, which included domestic residences and a coach house. This drawing also shows the modern sash windows that had been inserted while the tower was being used as an officers' mess. At the suggestion of the Office of Works, and under the direction of architect Anthony Salvin, these were replaced with new windows that were more in keeping with the original character of the tower. At the same time, the walls were refaced and battlements added to the roofline.
