Although the first floor of the Beauchamp Tower was opened to visitors in the nineteenth century, the rest of the tower continued to be occupied by one of the resident warders. The residence was described as a ‘cheerless and inconvenient quarter’. It was certainly an awkward space, since the living room was on the ground floor, while the sitting room and bedrooms were on the upper floors, connected to each other by a narrow spiral staircase.
