The Beauchamp Tower is famous for its examples of graffiti left by prisoners incarcerated in the Tower of London in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Most of the graffiti is on the first floor, shown in this drawing by the Office of Works. Formerly an officers’ mess, the room was opened to visitors in the 1850s, at a time when public interest in the Tower as a site of national historical importance was increasing.
