This is a Siamese rosewood recliner. It is sometimes called an imperial concubine’s bed (guifei chuang). The recliner is of superior quality and the backrest uses an openwork twisting vine design with inlaid marble, which is extremely graceful. The seat is narrow, making it appropriate for both sitting and reclining. These were intended for women to rest on in the daytime. A woman reclining and almost lying down would look especially stylish, which is why the recliner was called the beautiful woman’s bed, the beautiful woman’s recliner, or the imperial concubine’s bed.
