Beautifully Destroyed is a series of site-specific works; of the commissioned pieces, this is one of three that are on large walls, the others are in Miami and Santa Monica. 17 Other manifestations include common objects like newspaper vending machines or fire hydrants. Even though Risk is primarily a writer, this project was spawned from a desire to see more popping color in urban landscapes. The project began in poorer areas where, he felt the communities needed a little uplifting color. Beautifully Destroyed is similarly built up layer after layer of acrylic, spray-paint, lacquer, and metal dust rolled, spattered, and poured. His even geometric elements, which counterpoint the disorderly color fields, were painted freehand, attesting to his skill and 20+ years of experience. Photo © Ian Robertson-Salt
