From the Artist: I am a high schooler in Westchester. During the pandemic, my family and I spent time in Maine. We came back in September for the start of hybrid school. While in Maine, I discovered a passion that will stick with me for the rest of my life. On my birthday in June, I received my first camera, a Canon DSLR. Since then, I have been photographing everything around me. This photo attached is one of the first photos I took that I was really proud of. It really boosted my photography, and my confidence in my work. I was sitting in my yard in early August, trying to capture bees. I noticed a bee flying near me. It just kept buzzing back and forth, quite slowly. With a lot of luck and a bit of skill, I was able to focus on the flying bee, and capture this shot. From that point on, I started taking photos much more frequently. I tried again another day to capture a similar photo, but I could not get it to happen. That little bee didn’t know it, but he really made my day. I think this photo also speaks to the fact that noticing the small things in life, like bees in your backyard, can be fun and relaxing. Photography helped take my mind off the pandemic, giving me something to occupy my time with. Experiences like this have helped me with the photos I am taking now at home, in Westchester.
