Beer gourd

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

This is a large gourd made from a fruit plant which grows in millet fields. The gourd is extracted from the plant when ripe and left in the sun to dry for two weeks. The mouth is cut and the contents are removed. The bark of a tree is crushed into pieces and placed inside the gourd for six days to make it more ripe and clean. It is used to brew honey during ceremonies.
