Migration Museum

Migration Museum
Adelaide, Australia

This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams' and is symbolic of Belarusian immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
The subshyna, a type of briar rose, and the wattle symbolise the link between Belarus and Australia. The central image depicts the celebration of the harvest. The words Kasiu Jas Kaniusynu mean ‘cutting the clover’. Dressed in national costume, two dancers are placed on a map of Australia, emphasising the continuation of Belarusian traditions, using the colours yellow, red and black.
The fabric banner is constructed using cotton fabric, fabric paint, braid, nylon stocking, woollen material and felt. At the top of the banner and set against a white background is the word BELARUS in red and black felt; it is also displayed at the top of the banner (in the Belarusian language).
