Part of a set of 18 plates made in Brussels depicting scenes of Belgian towns and cities before World War I. The plate features the Grand Place at Mons, Belgium, site of the Lumecon, a yearly reenactment of the legendary battle between the dragon and Saint George. On August 23, 1914 Mons was the site of the first engagement between German and British forces on the Western Front. Presented to President Wilson by the King and Queen of Belgium at the White House, October 30, 1919.
