After Claude Monet’s visit to Belle-Ile in 1886, many artists followed in his footsteps, including Moret, Matisse, O’Conor and Auburtin. The latter stayed in Belle-Ile for the first time in 1894 and returned the following year for a longer visit. Auburtin’s Synthetism shows the influence of both Symbolism and Impressionism, and Japonism plays an important role in his work, particularly in his seascapes.
