The buckle consists of two palmette-shaped mother-of- pearl discs featuring two incised effigies of saints. Belt clasps were an important part of the bride’s costume in northern Bulgaria. They not only served for decoration, but also assumed the function of pre-Christian amulets and were meant to protect their wearer from ghosts and the ‘evil eye’.
