From the ninth to the seventh century B.C. the ancient kingdom of Urartu stretched across East Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Northwest Iran. Over 5000 metres high, the highestmountain in East Turkey isMount Ararat, a name referring to the ancient name Urartu. Hundreds of bronze objects fromthis culture were found, bearing witness to a characteristic art of metal-working.
Originally, this bronze belt was attached to a leather underbelt. The numerous small perforations along the edges show how the bronze was attached to the leather. Bothmen and women used to wear such belts.
The decoration is done with a good eye for detail. The hunting scenes show lions with gapingmaws in pursuit of deer. Helmeted horsemen wielding spears are hunting down both the lions and the deer.
