Belvoir dates to Norman times when a castle was built here by Robert de Todeni, William the Conqueror's Standard Bearer at the Battle of Hastings. The castle was rebuilt between 1523 and 1555, and in 1645, during the Civil War, it was besieged for four months. It was consequently demolished but rebuilt in the mid 17th century and grounds laid out. In 1780 Lancelot 'Capability' Brown prepared plans for Belvoir, including the creation of lakes, woods and earthworks, although not all were fully realised. The castle and grounds were again remodelled in the early 19th century, and much of this can be recognised today.
