Bengt Hedin joined CERN in 1952, two years before the Organization came into being officially. Among Bengt Hedins's lasting achievements have been the design of the SC magnet, still going strong at the date of his retirement, and various significant improvements of this oldest of CERN’s machines. In the photo 248 Ernst Michaelis (staff identification no. 00001), for many years Leader of the former SC Division, presents Bengt (staff identification no. 00002) in the name of his friends with gifts including a sculpture by Tony Lang, which symbolizes Bengt's historical memo of 1953: Erection Scheme for the SC Magnet. Bengt Hedin enjoyed a long retirement; he passed way on 24 August 2006.
