Beni Putul performance

An excerpt from a glove puppet performance, entitled “Bina Poner Biye” or A Wedding without Dowry. Though the dowry system has been made illegal - yet it continues to be practised in many parts of West Bengal and India. Using folk performing arts as a vehicle, the government tries to spread the No Dowry message. This is a popular Beni Putul act and this excerpt shows the girl and boy getting married. Notice the deft way in which garlands are exchanged.
