Benjamin Martin "Drum" compound microscope

Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain

Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain
Madrid, Spain

Like all the examples of this model in the collection, this microscope has a vertical body where the cylindrical tube with the eyepiece and lens at the ends was placed. The lens aligned with the stage's central hole to illuminate the sample using light reflected by the mirror located on the same vertical body. The stage had 2 side holes for inserting the slide holding the sample. Specially designed containers with transparent bases could also be used for examining liquids, small insects, or other objects. Macroscopic focus was achieved by rotating the side screw to move the tube along the rack mechanism.
