Lisbon, Portugal

Ceremonial vehicle built for the Royal House. The lacquer decoration seen on the side panels is likely to have been carried out by the famous "Martin Brothers," deemed to be the best varnishers of their time, in Paris.

The lower side panels decorated in grisaille, depict the four seasons of the year represented by statues. On the right panel, Spring with garlands of flowers, and Winter, with cornucopias taking the form of an adult woman. On the left side, Summer, with wheat stalks and sickle, and Autumn, in the form of a Satyr raising a glass of wine. The interior is upholstered in blue velvet.

The body is entered using a hanging step.
