Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

In the 1520s, Reform-minded Anabaptist movements emerged in several locations. One of the most radical of these groups was active in Münster in 1534–35. After the Catholic party was victorious, the protagonists were put on trial. The hangman Bernd Knipperdolling was one of the most notorious members of the Münster group and was sentenced to be tortured to death.

  • Artist Biography: Probably trained in Soest, the painter joined the workshop of Ludger tom Ring the Elder in 1521. Later, impressed by the work of Albrecht Dürer, he turned to copperplate engraving and created a series of outstanding portraits in that medium as well as depictions of biblical and mythological figures. Aldegrever was a committed supporter of the Reformation.
