The Alfonsino is a perch-like fish with very hard ctenoid scales. It has a well-developed lateral line system that is equipped with numerous sensory cells. Since these are embedded in a gelatinous mass, the fish is referred to as “slime head” in German. Under the name Alfonsino it is a popular food fish around the world.
