Half-body portrait of man, directed to the right. Long wig in curls and powder. Brown eyebrows and eyes, straight nose, half-open mouth, apparent incisor teeth. Pink ermine-lined cloak, attached over the right shoulder by a pearl strand and green square stone. Open red coat, with buttons of the same color, showing metallic armor. White fists and jabô, the latter semi-apparent, surrounded by a small dark green frill with golden thread. At chest height, under a mantle, detail of the cross of the Order of Christ. Visible upper part of the pants, in ocher tones. Right arm flexed down, hand inside the pants pocket. Left arm articulated backwards, hand on a cylindrical stick supported by a terrestrial globe, located in the lower right corner, with the inscription: "sea / ocean". In the lower left corner, a royal crown on a pillow. In the background, at the left and right ends, columns, and between these, in the center, red drapery and blue sky detail.
Dom José I (Lisbon, June 6, 1714 - Sintra, February 24, 1777), king of Portugal and Algarves, from 1750 until his death. Son of King Dom João V and his wife, Queen Maria Ana of Austria. During his reign the Marquis of Pombal, his secretary of state, reorganized Portuguese laws, economy and society, modernizing the country.
