This Bible was acquired in 1835 by John Chippendale (1811-77), the great grandson of John Chippendale, Thomas's father. In it are recorded the births and deaths of John, his wife Mary Anne (1813-80), their children, grandchildren and subsequent issue from 1834 until 1970. Thomas Chippendale was the only son of John Chippendale and Mary Drake, who married in 1715. When Mary died in 1729 John Chippendale re-married and had seven more children, who were Thomas Chippendale's half-brothers and sisters. The eldest of these was John (1731-81), who succeeded to his father's joinery business. John's descendants remained in Otley and in the 19th century established a saw mill and timber yard there.
