Vera Frenkel (b. 1938)

Multi-disciplinary artist Vera Frenkel has been a key figure of the Canadian avant-garde, best known for her work in video, performance, sculpture, printmaking and installations. She is internationally acclaimed for her video works, which have been shown at high profile institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Since the 1970s, Frenkel’s work has retained a focus on the socio-political realm, examining discrimination, censorship, bureaucratization, immigration and exile.

Born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, Frenkel spent her childhood in England before emigrating to Canada. After obtaining her degree in Fine Arts from McGill University in 1959, she pursued her studies in Montreal with Arthur Lismer and Albert Dumouchel.
Since the early 1970’s, Vera Frenkel has shown her work widely in Canada and internationally, notably at Documenta IX, the Offenes Kulturhaus in Linz, the Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo, the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Venice Biennale. In 2005 Frenkel was awarded the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.
