In the final year of her singles career and the oldest competitor in the tournament at 39 years old, Billie Jean King competed in the 1983 Virginia Slims Championships held at Madison Square Garden, featuring the top 15 female players in the world. She fell to Chris Evert in the semifinals. While she continued to play doubles sporadically until 1990, King's final match of her career was a second-round loss at the 1983 Australian Open.
