This view of the Thames shows Billingsgate Market, England’s largest inland fish market on the north bank of the river, at the north end of London Bridge, which can be seen in the background. The plate may have been etched outdoors, following the artist's return to London from Paris, perhaps from the steps of the Custom’s House. The etching was printed as part of 'A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames and Other Subjects' (known as 'The Thames Set') in 1871. This example is an especially heavily inked impression.
