This case of leather was found in a farm nearby Walkenreid Abbey in 1859 by the collector Friedrich Culemann. After his death in 1887 it found its way to the Kestner Museum in Hannover.

Three of the embossed seals correspond with the seal of Birger Magnusson, Jarl (Duke) of Sweden between 1248 and 1266. Scholars have debated throughout the decades whether it really belonged to Birger Jarl or not.

The leather case is on a long term loan from the Kestner Museum to the History Museum in Stockholm since 1973.
