This archival photograph from 1948 shows a bison herd on Wells Flat, below Black Bear Mountain, at Oklahoma's Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is the oldest wildlife facility managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Although only a small number of bison are visible in this image, the Wichita Mountains herd was then the nation's largest.
