Black Burlesque (revisited) finds its roots in the powerful renderings of song and dance that can be traced to the homelands of each collaborator. The work brings vivid fragments of daily life and culture to the stage in a rhythmic layering of movement, stories and sound. Traditional dances - including South African gumboot dancing, and circle and line dances from the Southern U.S. and Caribbean -- are juxtaposed and integrated into contemporary and popular dance and music styles. The work includes visual design by renowned South African artist Thabiso Phokompe, costume design by Adrienne McDonald and lighting design by Tyler Micoleau. Black Burlesque (revisited) began its national tour in October 2003 with stops in nine cities from coast to coast, and had its New York City premiere at Dance Theater Workshop, October 22-November 1, 2003.
