Black Satin Slippers

1830

York Castle Museum

York Castle Museum
Eye of York, United Kingdom

Pair of black satin slippers with square toes and flat leather soles, about 1830. The shoes are made straight and have not been worn. The original creases where the shoes would have been folded flat are still visible across the satin. The sole of each slipper is stamped '35/25/1.' Each shoe is decorated with a small black ribbon-bow and the edges of the shoe are bound in black satin tape. The inside of each slipper has a white kid leather lining with black string cords at the top used to tighten the shoes to the wearers foot.
