Black Squared Military Flag

Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This military flag is painted with a yin-yang symbol at the center, surrounded by eight trigrams as well as nine patterns on a turtle, which were said to be obtained from the Luo River by Yu the great of the Xia. Painting heaven-related objects on the flag symbolizes an act of forming a link between rulers on earth and the principles of heaven and a wish for their eternal power.
