Martin Margiela’s treatment of shoulders are a particularly noteworthy aspect of the fashion house, and evolved during Margiela’s career. In the late 1980s, the house had a breakthrough, creating a very narrow jacket with puffed sleeves mounted high on the shoulders. As the jacket is worn, the wearer’s actual shoulders are outlined right below the puffed sleeve. The next two decades saw several experiments with shoulder proportions, with the shoulder lines widened, expanded upwards, and even moved entirely to the front. In this example from the 2008-2009 Autumn-Winter collection, the shoulder has almost completely disappeared in a conical silhouette that reaches up to the nose. The back and shoulders of the jacket end in an upstanding collar expanding into a high, face-framing outline.
